Schematic representation of the glycocalyx and its constituents. Syndecan and glypican are membrane-bound proteoglycans which carry chondroitin sulfate and heparan sulfate side chains. Syndecans are anchored to the plasma membrane via a single-span transmembrane protein and may therefore act as receptors. Glypicans are attached to the cell surface via a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor. The glycocalyx is also comprised of secreted proteoglycans, such as perlecan, together with secreted glycosaminoglycans, such as hyaluronan. Note that this figure is not drawn to scale
